The Everyday Violence of Being A Woman

By Anonymous

She told us about her thought of being a woman. And this is her self reflection.

But you will never be a man. And is to wish to be so wrong? Is it anti-feminist to desire to live without the fear of sexual assault ‘naturally’ brought about by my possession of a vagina? Let alone the daily discriminations which are so entrenched that most of society doesn’t even notice them. Yes that’s hair under my arms. Don’t you grow it?

07-domestic-violence-awareness-month-smallDeep down I do not want to be a man. I like being a woman. I like my body – it’s the one I’ve got and 25 years have made me pretty comfortable in it. But this comfort has come slowly and despite rather than because of society and its normative ideas. It’s a comfort that I fought for, a hard fight against a beast that still rears its head from time to time. And when I think of the battles I faced I get angry. Because they were so hard and to society they are nothing. There are billions of women who face the same battles or even harsher ones every day. Society does not care. Every moment a woman is being raped, violated, placed second, mutilated, denied, forgotten, silenced, simply because she is ‘she’. And we do not care. Even the ‘she’s in the ‘we’ do not care. Not enough.

Talk About It

Even in a supportive context, getting comfortable with our bodies as they develop sexually can be a challenge. This challenge is multiplied when society makes sex and all things relating to It taboo. Sara Barnes, Intern at Samsara shares her experience

Lets talk about sex

My mother was amazing. I don’t remember when I first learnt what sex was because I don’t remember ever not knowing, there was never an ‘oh the birds and bees, and, well storks or…’ awkward conversation because from the first my mother approached sex and reproduction as something that happened. It helped that I had a keen interest in the natural world, watched hundreds of animal documentaries and was raised in a home that believed people were just another kind of animal. Years before I reached puberty my mother gave me a book called “How Your Body Works”, sometimes we read it together, sometimes she left me to flick through it alone. I knew I would start menstruating years before I did, I looked forward to it with a mixture of apprehension and excitement.

Kekerasan Seksual Itu “Bukan Cuma!”

Thinking about ‘Grassroots’

By Sara Barnes

As a community based organisation we often use the word grassroots to describe our efforts, but what exactly do we mean by grassroots and how can we better understand the term to better our efforts?

603067_10151466282707960_1906366589_nGrassroots is an adjective used to describe something which is perceived as ‘natural’ and ‘grows’ from the ground or bottom. In a societal context, the grassroots are building blocks of our society, individual people and their immediate communities. From this, a grassroots issue can be understood as one which directly affects people in a specific community on the individual level. A movement which acts on this issue forms ‘naturally’ when individuals begin organising around it within their community. Thus when we speak of a grassroots organisation we mean an organisation that forms and ‘grows’ within a community in response to the experiences of individuals who belong to that community.

Government, Society and Public Space for Activism

By Sara Barnes

ACTIVISM-iconActivism traditionally takes place in public space, the arena available to everyday citizens for interaction. The scope of interactions which are possible within this space is governed by the government and by the society which engages within it. The government uses constitutional constraints and criminal laws to regulate what is allowed in this space.  Ayoob theorises that the provision and regulation of public space can be used by governments to limit activities which are considered extreme (2008). By allowing the majority of people to express their opinions and interact without fear, more radical ideologies find it harder to gain followers. In addition the limitations imposed by government make it difficult for those ideologies considered extreme or to be a danger to the current regime.
